Newborn Portraits

Newborn

Last week I did a portrait shoot of an adorable 5 day old little girl, Isabella. It was a location shoot to make it better for the mother and the baby.

It is important when shooting newborns for the baby to be fed and asleep or they do not like what is happening around them.

Local Forth of July Fireworks

Posted

fireworks

The local (Brick, NJ) 4th of July fireworks were delayed a week this year due to a threat of a hurricane. However they went off as rescheduled Thursday 10th of July, just thought I'd share some photos and a video. I shot the video with my GoPro but had to crop the video, I added this amazing rendition of the “Start Spangled Banner” by 7 year old Rhema Marvanne.

Here are some photos of the fireworks display (I just figured that if I was going to tell you how I should do it myself).

Taking Photos Of Fireworks Tips

Posted

fireworks

Get there early and scout out a location that has a good foreground, background and view of the area the fireworks will be.

Use a Tripod, if you don't have one brace your camera on a car roof, tree trunk or any stable surface and set camera to manual. Use an aperture (size of opening in the lens) of between f/5.6 and f/11 (midrange). Try shutter speeds from 1/2 second to a couple of seconds (on most cameras to get the longer shutter speeds set camera to bulb and hold shutter down to expose and release to stop exposure). The longer speeds capture the movement of the fireworks (and any movement of the camera so keep it steady). If you have a cable release for the shutter use it to minimize shake when you press the shutter if not try to minimize shake as best you can.

Try different apertures (f-stops) and shutter speeds.

If you are using a camera in your smart phone again steady yourself by leaning on a tree, car or any fixed structure. As far as adjustments, you may not have many but you should turn off the flash, there probably is no speed or aperature adjustments. You could try changing the iso from 100 for some and range to 800 (if available).

Have fun.

Photoshop, A Very Necessary Photographers Tool

Posted 1/12/14

photoshop

Every photograph, even well exposed and well framed photos, can be improved with a basic understanding of Photoshop. Even more incredible is the ability to correct a poorly exposed or poorly framed photo and make it appealing.

Knowing what can be accomplished with this tool is important for all photographers, amateur and professional. For instance basic exposure correction and cropping, minimizing blemishes in a portrait, adding or removing a subject (person or object), changing a color photo to black and white or resizing a photo (can be necessary for digital transfer or storage).

For those not familiar with everything this program can do don't be intimidated, you don't need to know every feature for it to be useful. Basic correction and cropping are a starting point. Many schools have Photoshop classes that are not very expensive.

For website designing Photoshop is invaluable, for one thing a jpeg file can be converted to a png or gif file and the gif can be animated. The importance of converting to these types of files for website design is size, a png or gif file can be smaller than a jpeg and not loose quality. Smaller image size allows the site to open faster. There are many other advantages for web designers like slicing, but I want to focus on photographers and any photographer that has to shoot for a web client may need to use these other file types.
