Understanding Basic Photography

Photography actuality means drawing with light, so knowing that you should understand that when you take a photo of someone or something you are really capturing the light reflecting off that object. White or light color objects reflect light while black or dark color objects absorb light.

An example is snow or beach photos can be over exposed and photos in a wooded area or an asphalt parking lot can be under exposed. Another example is when photographing a bridal couple, to capture the correct exposure of their faces, the detail in the white gown could become washed out and the detail of the black tuxedo could be under exposed.

By keeping this in mind and knowing you are not really taking photos of objects only the light reflecting from the objects your photos quality should improve.
